Five Things to Consider Before Adopting a Puppy
Manual not included.
Welcoming Jake into our little family brought a whirlwind of new into our lives. As a previous cat owner, I had little knowledge of what adopting a puppy actually meant. Boy was I in for a treat! Here’s five things I’ve learned you should consider before brining a puppy home:
WELCOME TO PARENTHOOD. Yup, you heard me right. Raising a puppy is no joke! You’re now responsible for this little fluff’s life. On the positive side, there’s no diaper changing…only p**p scoopin’! TIP: always pack an extra doggy bag!
BE PREPARED TO SAY GOODBYE. Things you’ll say goodbye to: sleeping in, sleeping through the night, staying out late, making any last minute plans during the week with friends because your little one is waiting ever so patiently to be let outside, traveling whenever you want, aaannnddddd basically your freedom :) TIP: check out local dog-walking companies, doggy day cares and friends/ family who will be willing to help puppy-sit when needed!
SIT & STAY ARE NOT EASY. Who knew telling a cute little puppy to do something repetitively would be so difficult! TIP: use treats + kibble for reinforcement training.
BOARDING PASS NOT INCLUDED. If you’re considering a small-breed pup, luck (and airline rules) are in your favor! Some airlines only allow animals weighing 20lbs or less, inclusive of carrier, on the plane. If your best friend is over the limit, the airline won’t let them fly. TIP: consider driving to your next location.
WHO LET THE DOLLARS OUT. In case the first four bullets haven’t made it clear, puppies are like children, they’re constantly in need of something to help them grow, stay healthy & feel good. Choosing to bring a dog into your family is a BIG commitment. TIP: financially consider if you’re able to afford a puppy!
Jake has changed our lives so much, but even with all the adjustments, schedule changes, training pains and dollars spent, we are so in love with him and wouldn’t trade his love for anything!
